Chinooks - good food, close and I have been going there since I was 10 yrs old. I like Pasta Bella for Italian and Westernco for doughnuts; best French Crullers.

Re: Favorite Place To Eat
Tue, July 19, 2005 - 11:42 PMMy favorite is still Anthony's at Shilshole. Expensive, but I can't get enough of that view on the back deck - especially when the summer sun is going down and the sailboats are all out. Special occasion material for my budget these days, though! :)
I really liked the bar at Charlies too, but I noticed that they shut down! :( It was the best seedy sailor bar I thought (or maybe I just like hanging around marinas and drinking! lol!) I wonder if they are going to open it back up...
Hey - then there's Fremont! Great places to eat and drink there!

Re: Favorite Place To Eat
Wed, July 20, 2005 - 10:25 AMWe tried out Sofrito Rico - the new Puerto Rican place on Market - a couple of weeks ago. The food was excellent - incredibly tasty. Great service and casual atmosphere too.
Madame K's pizza is great. La Carta de Oaxaca has some of the best Mexican food I've had (outside of Mexico, or maybe Texas). -

Re: Favorite Place To Eat
Wed, August 3, 2005 - 9:28 PMI just moved to Ballard from San Francisco in mid-June, so I'm still learning my way around.
Been to La Carta de Oaxaca repeatedly, awesome food, decent prices, nice place to hang out.
Found Sofrito Rico to have a pretty limited menu, and everything I had there was pretty salty, but I might give it a second chance.
The Fish & Chips shop, out near the locks is fair, but cheap, and worth the price.
I really like the Italian Place at 22nd & Market (forget the name), they have outdoor seating too.
Also, I should plug my friend's place, it isn't in Ballard, but in Belltown (only 15 minutes) called Barocho, spanish/tapas and very good drinks.
Looking forward to trying Bay Cafe, and other stuff in the Fishermanswhat's-it, just south of the Ballard Bridge
Don't forget Ray's, it is pricey, but great views and HUGE portions.
Favorite sandwich shop "Other Coast Cafe", also huge portions...
Gosh, for only being here a month, I've really gotten around!
Please, say "Hi" any time, I'm looking to meet more folks up here

Re: Favorite Place To Eat
Sat, August 6, 2005 - 10:24 AMYou reminded me of another favorite place - not the Fish and Chips next to the Locks (which I think is called "Lockspot", no?) but the one across the street - Totem Fish and Chips. Love that place. Great fish, great chips, and milkshakes that won't spill if you hold them upside down. Yum! -

Re: Favorite Place To Eat
Sat, August 6, 2005 - 10:11 PMWhat on earth made you leave SF for Ballard? It wasn't the fish 'n chips... -
-
Re: Favorite Place To Eat
Sun, August 7, 2005 - 4:34 PMSold a house in SF, 1200 suqare feet, bought in Ballard 2400 square feet, price of house in ballard was about 60% of the house I sold.
In SF, between 1/1/02 and 12/31/04
1 Drive-by shooting , in driveway of next door neighbor
3 (yes three) seperate incidents where a reckless driver swerved and did >$1,000.00 damage to a car we had parked on the street (plus other cars, I'm only counting damage to ours)
Very limited restaurants in walking distance from the house, no movie theaters, very poor grocery shopping.
Public schools in SF are scary, not-safe places, private school is expensive.
Still in Ballard, I'm no more than 20 minutes from downtown, summer weather is MUCH better, and winter weather only a little worse.
City overall is cleaner, air is fresher, less aggressive pan-handling, fewer homeless that defacate in the streets.
Now, if only there was a local National League Baseball team!
Other questions, cheerfully answered!

Mon, August 8, 2005 - 1:22 PMVery good reasons! It sounds like you're happy here so far. Congrats!
I like it here too. ;-) -

Re: Favorite Place To Eat
Mon, August 8, 2005 - 7:12 PMI got to Ballard from S.F. too - although I was in Seattle before S.F. (and California before that).
Love/Hate S.F. for some of the same reasons. The love extreme is probably more intense, but so is the hate. I like the more even tempered "content" so much better these days - so much better. Ballard is the best!
